contronym

Contronym is a work for cello and piano duo. A contronym is a word that can be defined as its own antonym. Some common examples of this idea are words like transparent (invisible/obvious), screen (to show/to hide), and tender (gentle/harsh). Throughout this piece, the music is constantly pulled back and forth between two extremes of interpretation: placid expressivity and primitive aggression. The constant pull between these two states is represented throughout the piece by the slowly sliding pitches that occur in the cello melody. The piece explores the extreme difference between two expressions of the same musical material.
